From Goodreads: Remember, it’s only a game…
Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.
Welcome, welcome to Caraval…beware of getting swept too far away.
This was such a fun book! I had heard so much buzz and hype about this book, which to be honest did not make me want to read it. If anything, it made a me a little wary of it. But I finally picked it up and am genuinely glad I did. The world in this book is filled with so much creativity and is portrayed so vividly that it makes for a genuinely transporting reading experience!
While I had some issues with the insta-love between the two main characters, as well as multiple predictable bait-and-switch/red-herrings, the writing style and imagery of this book made this an enjoyable read. Usually insta-love is an "insta-turn off" for me in books, and I usually have a lot of trouble getting past that and enjoying the rest of the story, but the romance took enough of a back seat to the actual story and the imagery that I was able to genuinely enjoy the book.
This was a super fun and fast read, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is fans of whimsical imagery in their novels -- such as fans of A.G. Howards' Splintered series (one of my personal favorites!) or The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I definitely am looking forward to the sequel!
