Rating: 4.5/5
Note to Readers: This review has spoilers for the first book, so if you have not read this series yet, you may do better to read my spoiler free review of book one. This review is spoiler free for The Merciless II, but in order to review the book I do discuss some things from book one.
Wow -- I loved the first book and this one was even better! I was nervous that going into this book, it would follow many horror franchises in going downhill after the fantastic first one. But this book not only expanded on the first book but surpassed it in it's own right. Even as a standalone novel, this book would be considered incredible.
After the events of the first novel where Sofia witnessed her friends murdered brutally during an exorcism gone wrong, Sofia is experiencing serious panic attacks and paranoia. When her mother dies, she is sent to a Catholic boarding school where things aren't as they seem. This novel was creepy all the way through, and straight-up terrifying at times. As with book one, there was gore and satanic rituals and catty girl drama. It was great.
Danielle Vega is fast becoming my favorite YA horror author. With her cinematic writing, tight plots, and exceedingly well developed characters, I am blown away by every book she writes.
